India during its medieval time was ruled by the Mughal dynasty and Akbar was the third Mughal ruler after Babar and Humayun to rule in Agra. Mughal dynasty made Agra as Mughal capital, which is very close to the land of Rajputs ‘Rajasthan’. ‘Agra Fort’ a majestic fort constructed with red sandstone was built in 1573, spread in 380,000 square meter land. This fort was built by Akbar and it was the purpose of the Mughal residential fort in Agra. Mughal dynasty made Agra as a capital city and so Akbar decided to construct a residential fort, which finally emerged as an ‘Agra Fort’.

This beautiful red sandstone fort has first witnessed the pure love of Mughal price Jahangir and a common girl Anarkali which later became the cause of rebel between father and son. After Akbar, Jahangir became the Mughal ruler of this promising Mughal dynasty. There are many good stories which Agra fort has witnessed which are like a marriage of Akbar and Rajput princess Jodha Bai and a strong bond between Rajputs and Mughals.

History of Agra Fort:

Agra Fort has witnessed many stories and wars and it has been the residential fort to many rulers. Starting from Ibrahim Lodi, the fort before the Mughal dynasty belonged to Ibrahim Lodi and later Baber defeated Lodi and captured the fort.

He made some changes in the appearance of the fort and the major change was a modification of fort like a structure of the stepwell actually modified by Babar.

Later, after the death of Babar, the fort was captured by Sher Shah Suri from Humayun and later it was owned by Hemu Vikramaditya. After the death of Humayun, his son Akbar, fought a war against Hemu and finally defeated him and then took over the fort and this time was the final time when fort finally came back to the Mughal dynasty. The entire changes and look of Agra Fort, which we can see today, are done by Akbar and late Shah Jahan modified some beauty. After Shah Jahan, his son Aurangzeb and Maratha ruler had warred against each other and finally, the fort was captured by the East India Company as their base and after independence, the fort became the heritage property of Indian Government.
